RatedAntabusefor Alcohol DependenceReport

I highly recommend this treatment,I find it has helped to re-train my mind in the long habit of drinking achohol. I have been without alchohol for one year now and antabuse has helped a great deal. I did try having a drink a couple of times at the start, and had heart palpatations, and my face became very red, which was a very unpleasant experience. I am very proud of myself and feel much happier about everything, I feel my drinking was a habit, because I haven't found it too difficult.

The great thing about this drug is knowing that I've taken it, so drinking is out of the question. I did try and drink once while on antabuse and got very sick. Now if the thought of a drink comes in my head, I immediately push it aside. Because of the cost I am now taking it every 3 days. Enough to keep it in my system and to keep me from thinking about a drink. Also, AA is wonderful for support.

This drug works because you know you can't drink while it is in your system. But it only works if you are committed. A few times, I have decided I wanted to drink again so I stopped taking the anatabuse, waited a week, then started drinking. One time, some of the drug was still in my system and I got heart palpitations and my face turned brilliant red and hot. It was very unpleasant.

About 18 months ago I was introduced to antabuse and I decided to give it a run. Why? Because for 10 years I had been developing a problem with alcohol which had gotten to a quite ridiculous stage of bingeing; lasting for weeks on end. The power alcohol seems to have had over me was it's strong overriding impulse to have it immediately, in spite of any previously stated affirmations to the contrary. This is where Antabuse has been highly effective. It cuts off the power of the impulse drive, which operates on a "must-have-now" basis. Without the sabotaging excesses of alcohol I have better health, better relationships, better work, more money, more fun, I enjoy life and the simple things in it.

Weekly Meetings? Until I Die? No Contest. A choice between Antabuse or a lifetime of weekly-plus AA meetings and war stories - until I die? Are you kidding me?............13 years ago, I left my prior 10-12 hour per day job after I had settled my family's auto accident case for an amount which made it possible to walk away from work and take a few years off. I soon dedicated myself to fixing up a rental home we owned which needed much work. I was a one-man show, and I thought it would make what could be very tedious and lonely work a little more fun if I had a few glasses of wine in the afternoon as I was painting or rebuilding etc. Soon, 1-2 glasses/day turned into 4-5 glasses a day. My wife, who continued her day job, knew that I was making money for the family which we would realize when we sold the rental, but she was quite envious of the time flexibility which my work provided me compared to her's as a speech pathologist at an elementary school. So, knowing that she would be furious if she learned not only that I was working as I pleased but also drinking as I did so, I was careful to stop my drinking about 3 hours before we would see each other at the end of the day. This of course required me to start in a little early to get my bottle of wine a day done before 2-3 p.m. Since I was no handyman, it did not phase her when the job I thought should take about 2 months extended to 5,6,7 maybe 8 months. But I did eventually finish, and we sold the house for a good profit. By then, I was ready to get back into professional life, but this time on my own instead of working for a large city firm. I eventually opened my office, resolving that my afternoon drinking was over with. And it was for the 6 or so months I was able to keep the doors to my business open. But then I had another serious car accident. One of the things about people who have suffered from a TBI (traumatic brain injury) is that they tend to digress, which is what I'm about to do here. Sk

Antabuse does not remove the craving I was green warranted into a 30 day treatment center, at the end of the thirty days I was more then ready to get the hell out. Only one catch, the judge would let me go home only if I agreed to take antabuse. Of course I agreed. I realized years later, I wasn't ready nor did I want to stop drinking. If you’re not serious about stopping drinking it’s futile to take antabuse, it does nothing for the cravings and if you drink while taking this medication the side effects are horrendous. Regrettably, I was that Irresponsible I thought it was out of my system when I drank again evidently not. I suffered severe headaches; palpitations were so bad I knew my heart was going to blow. I later told the doctor about my experience. He said I could have going into shock and died. I am confident it works well for some. I finally got off booze and with the help of a 12 step program it’s been over twenty three years since my last drink and for that I am grateful.

It saved my life too. I was suffering from both chronic alcoholism and drug abuse. Looking back on it now, I probably had only a couple weeks of life left in me. I knew that if I could stay sober, I had a chance of staying clean; but one enabled the other and I wasn't strong enough for both. Antabuse forces sobriety. Staying sober lets me fight to stay clean. I've been clean for 1,147 days and counting. I plan on taking Antabuse for life. (The following explains why I rated "No Side Effects" a 5) My only concern is whether there are any risks associated with long-term usage. I've been experiencing rapid-onset episodes of extreme hypertension. If anyone has any more information on the subject, I'd greatly appreciate it.

works great for me I experienced no side effects. I believe this is the only way I would have been able to achieve anytype of prolonged sobriety. According to the pharmacist, it takes 2 weeks for all of the antabuse to leave your system so you can drink without a reaction. That is a good amount of time to think about wether you really want a drink. Over time I have lost the urge to drink because I know it is not a possibility--I just don't think about it much. I am not saying there is not the occassional urge to drink, but they grow further apart every day I take the antabuse. I have tried counseling, A.A., been to rehab 4 times and nothing worked until I started taking antabuse. I suggest antabuse AND individual counseling.

Saved my life I was held in detox for 18 days -- yes, detox, not rehab. It was clear to the staff that if they had released me any sooner I would have had a drink on the way home. (This is LONG ago; 28-day rehabs were not big yet.) Every alcoholic knows that "morning resolve": That's it, I'm putting my foot down, I'm not drinking today." As the day wore on, though, that motivation would flag. Antabuse helped me to leverage that motivation: I took it when I was sincerely motivated, in the morning, and then later, when I wanted to, I couldn't. It worked. I haven't had a drink in almost 26 years.
